What is Unity?

What is Unity
by Gloria Bates

I first started attending worship services at Unity churches over twenty years ago. And more recently, when I became a participant in Sunday worship services and other activities at Christ Church Unity, many people asked me, What is Unity? Even now the question arises from time to time.

The Next Step

I once read the following statement and it continues to shape my decisions in times of uncertainty:

“The most important step for you to take is the next step. The next step forms a crucial connection between your past actions and your future results. If you fail to take the next step, all the steps you’ve taken before will be wasted. If you do not take the next step, all the steps you’ve so carefully planned to take cannot be reached.”

What are Unity's basic teachings?

We encourage people to explore and apply Unity teachings based on their own spiritual understanding. We believe this spiritual understanding is enhanced through reflective prayer and meditation. The five basic ideas that make up the Unity belief system are:

God is good and everywhere present.

The spirit of God lives within each person, therefore, all people are inherently good.

We create our life experiences through our way of thinking.

There is power in affirmative prayer, which we believe increases our connection to God.

Knowledge of these spiritual principles is not enough. We must live them.
